DONATE YOUR LOVE TO A SHELTER

So you love animals, but maybe you’ve reached your maximum pet capacity or your landlord won’t allow you to own one. There are many reasons that might prevent you from adopting an animal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still help! If you can’t foster or adopt, you can still volunteer!

Animal shelters ALWAYS need helping hands! People who are loving and care about the welfare of the sheltered pets help the animals learn socialization skills as well as just keep them company.

There are also many sponsorship and donation options available for those generous souls who would like to help in the feeding, aid and care of a shelter animal.

ADOPT A PET

image

We all know friends are a wonderful thing to have, even if they aren’t always human!

Our friends come in all shapes and sizes, from different places and different pasts. We love them all the same and most of us would do anything we could to help make their lives happier.

When adopting a shelter animal you’ll not only make their life better, but your own as well! So consider adopting an animal in need, rather than buying your next pet.

Still not convinced it’s the right choice for you? Here are 10 very good reasons why to consider it!

image

1. YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING GOOD

All shelter animals are in need of a second chance at a good life. They have been lost, given up or abandoned and are helpless to do anything, but depend on some kind person to take them in. You are giving them a new life by giving them a loving home. Isn’t it the most amazing feeling when someone notices your in need and helps you out of the kindness of their heart, or when you get a chance at a lifelong dream? All these animals want is someone to love them, who they can love in return.

image

2. LESS TRAINING AND LESS STRESS

Despite popular belief, shelter animals are usually not as difficult to handle than purchased pets. Often animals in shelters have had previous training from past owners, or volunteers at the shelter. Some can even sit or stay on command, which means you won’t have to deal with the puppy/ kitten training issues such as biting, chewing, clawing, excessive energy etc.

Grownup pets don’t require the constant monitoring puppies do, leaving you with more freedom to do your own thing. If you have young children, or just value your “me time,” this is definitely a bonus.

image

3. BUYING FROM A STORE ISN’T THE BETTER CHOICE

Depending on where or how you buy your new pet, you could be unknowingly supporting a puppy mill, sometimes known as a puppy farm. Which is a commercial dog breeding facility that is operated with an emphasis upon profits above animal welfare. There are an estimated 4,000 puppy mills in the U.S. alone that produce more than half a million puppies a year.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are not even aware that puppy mills exist, so when they buy a pet from a pet store, online or other retail outlet, they are unwittingly supporting this cruel industry.

Unlike responsible breeders, who place the utmost importance on producing the healthiest puppies possible, breeding at puppy mills is performed without consideration of genetic quality. This results in generations of dogs with unchecked hereditary defects and illness.

Some puppy mill puppies are sold to pet shops usually through a broker, or middleman and marketed as young as eight weeks of age. The lineage records of puppy mill dogs are often falsified. Other puppy mill puppies are sold directly to the public, including over the Internet, through newspaper ads, and at swap meets and flea markets. Some never make it on display and are simply discarded.

Most pet store puppies come from puppy mills, where dogs are housed in cramped, filthy conditions without sufficient veterinary care, food, water and socialization. Furthermore, the dogs at puppy mills are bred as often as possible without rest between litters, in order to increase profits.

And after they’re no longer profitable, breeding dogs are simply discarded—either killed, abandoned or sold at auction.

Don’t give these people your hard earned money!!!

If you’re looking to make a puppy or kitten part of your family, make adoption your first option and find an animal at your local shelter. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. Shelters across the country have dogs and puppies for adoption that need loving homes. 25% of all dogs in shelters are purebreds.

If you’re committed to a specific breed of dog and can’t find what you’re looking for at your local shelter, contact a rescue group for that breed or ensure you find a reputable dog breeder!!! Learn how to spot the difference HERE

4. SHELTER ANIMALS ARE JUST AS HEALTHY IF NOT MORE SO

In fact, shelter pets can be quite healthy. Contrary to popular opinion, research has revealed that pets adopted from shelters or rescue organizations are actually 5% less likely to suffer an unexpected trip to the veterinarian compared to pets purchased through pet stores. In addition, many shelter pets are already spayed and neutered, and some even come with location microchips. Animals are often better cared for in shelters than in pet stores where they are left in small cages or displays in large groups, which spreads illness easier.

5. YOU ARE SAVING A LIFE

About 3 to 4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs—about one every 11 seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. That’s 11,000 pets every day.

The sad truth is that every year, multiple millions of healthy, sweet, soulful dogs and cats are killed at animal shelters across this country just for lack of cage space; as with people, bad luck can cause good dogs to become homeless through no fault of their own. By adopting a shelter animal, you’re doing your part to help end the nationwide crisis of animal homelessness.

It’s impossible to determine how many stray dogs and cats live in the U.S. Estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million.

Ending the euthanasia of homeless animals is a goal that all animal welfare organizations share. But the reality is that shelters, with their limited space and finite resources, cannot achieve this goal without high levels of community support. That’s where you come in.. and hopefully adopt!

6. YOU SAVE MONEY WHILE SAVING A LIFE

Buying a pet can easily cost $500 to $1,000 or more. Adoption costs range from $0 to $200, depending on whether the pet comes from a shelter or a rescue group that has spent money on boarding, vets and grooming. In addition, animals from many shelters are already spayed or neutered and vaccinated, which makes the shelter’s fee a bargain compared to purchase price and having to pay for it all out of pocket.

7. PETS MAKE THE PERFECT COMPANIONS AND HELP TO PUT AN END TO LONELINESS

Whether you’re single or have a huge family, their are bound to be moments where you’ve been lonely and wished you had some company.

Pets have a way of putting a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally, and physically beneficial. Caring for a companion animal can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation in all age groups.

On the road or home alone a pet can make the long hours seem like seconds. Life is better enjoyed in good company and what better than a loving animal that makes you smile?

Shelters have all shapes and sizes of lovable mutts, purebreds, all-American cats, puppies and kittens, adolescents and seniors. Your chances of finding a wonderful companion who matches your lifestyle, family, and home are excellent! And you’ll rarely find yourself alone with an adoring animal by your side.

A “second-hand” pet in no way means second-rate. On the contrary, many shelter animals seem to sense what they were up against and become among the most devoted and grateful companions.

8. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GETTING AND YOU GET A LOT

Most shelter pets receive basic training and socialization before adoption to help make the transition to their new family easier. Staff and volunteers at shelters become familiar with the disposition of each animal which helps them to make optimal matches between homes and pets, and helps you make you the most appropriate adoption decision.

A pet purchased from a pet store is a complete unknown. And, once you walk out of the store, you are on your own. Most pet stores don’t provide any support if you have questions or problems with your new pet. You are lucky to get a refund if something does go wrong.

When you adopt they will also help you through the familiarization period because they are invested in providing a good home for that animal.

Many of the pets posted on Petfinder are in foster care. Foster parents live with their charges 24-7 and can often tell you, in detail, about the pet’s personality and habits. If the pet is at a shelter, the staff or volunteers may be able to tell you what he or she is like.

You can ask the staff if the pet was an owner surrender (rather than a stray) and, if so, what the former owner said about him or her.

You can also ask about the health and behavioral evaluations the pet has undergone since arriving at the shelter. In contrast, pet store owners rarely have an idea of what a pet will be like in a home.

image

9. YOU ARE SENDING A GOOD MESSAGE

Until the pet overpopulation crisis has been resolved, adopting from a shelter is the humane, ethical choice for millions of Americans!

When you adopt from a shelter, you become part of the solution to the overpopulation crisis. You give a deserving animal a new home. You free up cage space for another animal needing to be adopted. And your adoption fee goes toward the shelter’s education and spay/neuter programs, which help prevent more unwanted litters. They also help support veterinary treatment of animals in need as well as supplies for the shelter residents.

Adopting a pet shows you’re a caring person and when your friends ask where you got your amazing pet, you can tell them “at the shelter.”

Your adoption may encourage others to do the same!

10 . YOUR SPREADING HAPPINESS

Be an inspiration. Give love, Get love!

When you give a hopeless animal a happy home. You give yourself a happy heart. Life is good when you do good. Share the love you have and open your arms to a new friend. Give an unwanted animal a happy ending to their story and add value to yours.

So now you know why adopting is the BEST choice and why it should be your only choice when getting a new pet. There are many wonderful shelters and rescue groups available to find your new friend!

Huntington Toyota will also be holding a special event at the dealership! Adopt A Pet Day, September 27th! We hope you’ll stop by, there will be food, fun and plenty of furry friends available for adoption!
